Roanoke Island Historical Association is excited to announce the dates of its 2nd Annual Lost Colony Wine and Culinary Festival. The festival opens with the Vintner’s Dinner on Friday, September 28th followed by the Grand Tasting on Saturday, September 29th.  Last year’s inaugural event was a triumphant success with attendees proclaiming it to be the best event on the Outer Banks!

The Grand Tasting will take place on the grounds of the famous outdoor drama, The Lost Colony.   Attendees will taste over 100 wines from around the world, discover local craft beers, sample savory local fare and enjoy live entertainment, surrounded by breathtaking views of the Roanoke and Pamlico Sounds. But this year, the very popular Beer Garden has been expanded to include local breweries and regional craft beers, two additional local eateries, and a second band.  There will be no better way to spend a fall day on the Outer Banks!

The Lost Colony Wine & Culinary Festival opens on Friday, September 28th with a Vintner’s Dinner featuring Virginia Dare Wines at 108 Budleigh in downtown Manteo.  A multi-course meal will be fabulously paired with the wines by Chef Sam McGann of the Blue Point, an Outer Banks legend. The Lost Colony Wine & Culinary Festival’s Grand Tasting event on Saturday, September 29th opens at 1PM for VIP ticket holders ($85) and at 2PM for General Admission ($60). The Family Coppola’s Virginia Dare Winery partners with the Roanoke Island Historical Association for this “don’t miss” festival in benefit of The Lost Colony. Roanoke Island is the site of Queen Elizabeth I’s first attempt to establish a colony in the New World, and is the birthplace of America’s first English child, Virginia Dare. The Lost Colony tells the story of the 1587 colony and has performed on this historic site since 1937. Roanoke Island is also home to the Mothervine, America’s oldest cultivated grapevine. The island’s history is imbedded with fabulous legends!  The Virgin Queen and Sir Walter Raleigh’s dreams, the colony’s unsolved disappearance, and a love story that tells how the grapes of the Mothervine became stained red. The Lost Colony Wine & Culinary Festival celebrates Roanoke Island’s history, legends and heritage with wine, handcrafted beer and sumptuous food.

Francis Ford Coppola is intrigued with the mystery and legends of the Lost Colony.  When Virginia Dare Wines, a North Carolina winery during the 1800s, became available for purchase, The Family Coppola seized the opportunity to add its legendary wine to its portfolio of wineries and resorts.  In 2015, The Family Coppola launched the revitalization of Virginia Dare Winery at its new home in Sonoma County, promoted as “American Wines Since 1835.”  Crafted with grapes from the finest viticulture regions in California, Virginia Dare Winery wines are rich with characteristics befitting an American legend:  Pure. Natural. Distinctive.  The partnership with The Lost Colony Wine & Culinary Festival reflects The Family Coppola’s appreciation of history and storytelling, and celebrates the treasures, people and places that shaped this great country.

Virginia Dare Babies Announced!

Virginia Dare is one of the most influential historical figures to the Outer Banks. Dare County and Virginia Dare Trail are named in her honor. As the first English child born in the New World, her name is found in history books across America. In celebration of her 431st birthday, The Lost Colony continues its beloved tradition of casting local infants in the performance. On August 18th, six babies perform throughout the evening, appearing in different scenes. Virginia Dare Night is sponsored by First National Bank.

This year we will feature two nights with live babies as Virginia Dare! The six babies that will make their debut on Saturday, August 18th are: Susan Valerie Northrop, daughter of Margaret and Paul Northrop of Raleigh, NC; Claire Doxey, daughter of Esther and Jeff Doxey of Wanchese, NC; Kennedy Sanford Basnight-Moran, daughter of Caroline Basnight and Allen Moran of Manteo, NC; Mabel Gray Barker, daughter of Alex and Rob Barker of Manteo, NC; Nola Wrae Powell, daughter of Laurette and Brent Powell of South Mills, NC; and Hadley Mabel Basnight, daughter of Katie and Zack Basnight. The six babies that will make their debut on Monday, August 20th are: William Chesley Leavel, son of Lillie & Brandon Leavel; Sarah Bush, daughter of Crystal and Jarrett Bush; Riley Mae Penn, daughter of Monica and Bo Penn of Kill Devil Hills, NC; Porter Lane, daughter of Danielle and Derek Lane of Kill Devil Hills, NC; Evalynn Beatrice Witter, daughter of Jess and Matt Witter of Kill Devil Hills, NC; and Emma Rose Phan, daughter of Nikki and Michael Phan of Kill Devil Hills, NC. The 2018 Virginia Dare babies will be added to a long list of community members who participated in the historic drama at a very early age.

On Saturday, August 18th, come celebrate Virginia Dare’s 431st birthday at the “Virginia Dare Faire” in the field outside of the Fort Raleigh Visitor Center. Join us for games and activities from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM, provided by company members of The Lost Colony and National Park Service, followed by cake from Harris Teeter.  The Virginia Dare Faire is free to the public and is sponsored by First National Bank.

Virginia Dare Faire 2018

The Lost Colony and National Park Service cordially invite you to the 2018 Virginia Dare Faire sponsored by First National Bank. Celebrate the 431st birthday of Virginia Dare, on Saturday, August 18th, with events all day at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site! Virginia Dare Faire will be held in the field outside of the Fort Raleigh Visitor Center from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM.

Activities for Virginia Dare Faire are free of charge and open to children of all ages, guaranteeing fun for the whole family! Events will vary from field games to creating clay pots with actors dressed as Native Americans. Carnival-like activities including coloring, face painting, and bubble stations will be open all morning. Field games like Sir Walter’s potato toss, hula-hoop activities, sack races and archery stations are also a small sampling of the day’s happenings. Other entertainment will include street dancers, royal etiquette lessons, photo opportunities with Queen Elizabeth, a fight demonstration, and special appearances from characters of The Lost Colony.

Join Park Rangers to learn about the design and function of military installations, like the earthen works at Fort Raleigh, by constructing a fortification using moon sand. Participants will learn about the 1585 soldiers, fortifications, the 1952 reconstruction, and the artifacts uncovered at the site. Stop by the National Park Service water color station where you will be able to create your own water color painting and learn about the explorer, scientist, and artist John White. John White was among the first English men to document the Carolina Algonquin people, landscape, flora and fauna found in the New World.

There will be birthday cake, provided by Harris Teeter, at 12:00PM.

The evening’s performance of The Lost Colony features live babies in the role of Virginia Dare.  This year’s Virginia Dare babies will be added to a long list of dignified alumni who participated in the historic drama at a very early age. This yearly tradition has become a much-anticipated event on the Outer Banks. First National Bank is the proud sponsor of the 2018 Virginia Dare Faire and Virginia Dare Night festivities.
