Into the Woods

Into the Woods is an award-winning musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine. It premiered on Broadway in 1987. During a year dominated by Phantom of the Opera, the original production won several Tony Awards, including Best Score, Best Book, and Best Actress in a Musical (Joanna Gleason). The Musical has been produced many time, and was recently seen on Broadway in a 2002 revival.

The musical was inspired by Bruno Bettelheim’s 1976 book, The Uses of Enchantment. It intertwines the plots of several Brothers Grimm tales as they explore the consequences of their wishes and quests. The main characters come from the stories of Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hook, and Rapunzel and are tied together by an original story including a Baker and his wife who desire to start a family. Other known tales are referenced as well.

(Manteo, N.C., July 7, 2008) – This Sunday is your last chance to journey into the enchanted forest with Little Red, Prince Charming, Rapunzel, Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, and other fairy tale characters as their lives intertwine in Stephen Sondheim’s Tony award-winning musical Into the Woods. The musical’s final performance is on July 13 at 8:15 p.m. in Manteo on Roanoke Island.
In this musical, your favorite Brother’s Grimm characters quest to find their wishes in a magical musical forest where their stories, like Jack’s beanstalk, twist and tangle: Cinderella wishes to go to the ball, Jack wishes his cow would give milk, the Baker and his wife wish for a child, Little Red Riding hood wants to see her grandmother, and the witch wishes to reverse a spell. While the characters journey into the forest to get their wish in Act I, they deal with the consequences of their wishes in Act II.
