Funny Thing PR July 08
(Manteo, N.C., July 21, 2008) – The opening number
explains it all: “…something familiar, something
peculiar, something for everyone—a comedy tonight.”
Audiences will have two opportunities to enjoy this
familiar refrain in A Funny Thing Happened on the
Way to the Forum presented by The Lost Colony on
August 3 & 10 at 8:15 pm onstage at Waterside
Theatre. The musical blends music, farce and
slapstick comedy together for a potpourri of
hilarious fun to be enjoyed by all.
Two-thousand year-old jokes are as fresh as today’s
pod-casts and complete with quick-paced buffoonery
according to director Melissa Ricketts-Tillery.
“This musical moves fast—each scene offers something
new and unexpected,” explains Tillery. “Audiences
will definitely see a comedy that will appeal to all
ages.”
Tillery has directed musicals and theatrical
productions in Alabama, Kentucky, Tennessee, as well
as North Carolina. She is also keen on spotting
talent. Outside of her summer employment as The Lost
Colony’s Stage Manager, Tillery is audition director
for the South Eastern Theatre Conference. In this
position, she auditions approximately 6,000 to 8,000
actors a year.
Tillery is particularly fond of Forum. She describes
the musical as a comedic feast. “Forum features the
classic characters of comedy—the handsome soldier,
hen-pecked husband, wide-eyed beautiful leggy girls
and naïve lovers who get mixed up in the chaos
created by the do-good intentions of the main
characters Pseudolus and Lycos.”
The Lost Colony has a reputation of presenting
top-notch ancillary productions at Waterside
Theatre. After attending last week’s performance of
Into the Woods, Manteo-resident Beth Storie
commented, “The production of Into the Woods was the
best I have ever seen, and I've seen that play on
Broadway and at the Kennedy Center. We would have
happily sat through it again on the spot. It was
past fabulous!!”
“This musical is a chance to see The Lost Colony
Company excel in a completely different performance
at Waterside Theatre,“ says Carl Curnutte, Executive
Director and Producer. “In addition to The Lost
Colony audiences this summer can see Sleeping Beauty
and Reaching for the Stars, a Broadway song and
dance showcase.”
These ancillary productions are part of The Lost
Colony’s Joe Layton Performance Series, named in
memory of Layton, acclaimed director of Broadway,
stage and screen who directed the production for 20
years. At The Lost Colony, he conceived of a summer
performance and workshop program for the cast and
crew as an opportunity to present their
multi-faceted talents to the public, while honing
their craft through hands-on experience.
A Funny Thing…Forum
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum
opened on Broadway in1962 and ran for over 900
performances. The show won Tony Awards for best
musical, best actor, best supporting actor, best
book, and best director. The musical represented
Sondheim's first time as lyricist and composer on
Broadway.
There have been several Broadway revivals of the
musical. The most recent 1996 revival featured
Nathan Lane, Whoopi Goldberg and David Alan Grier in
stints as Pseudolus. Interestingly, every actor who
has opened the show on Broadway in that role has won
the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical.
